We really want to inspire a new generation to take part in the census.
As part of the census rehearsal we developed an education programme to help teach children in primary schools about the census. Let’s Count! included census-inspired lesson plans and supported learning across the main areas of the English and Welsh Curriculum.
The programme was available to all primary schools in the four census rehearsal areas: Carlisle, Ceredigion, Hackney and Tower Hamlets.
Schools in these areas were also encouraged to host a Let’s Count! day in October and enter a competition.
Children were challenged to count all the different things they found on a short walk around the school and share what they found in exciting ways.
A panel of judges picked a winner from each of the four rehearsal areas. Three of these won £500 in school supplies while one was crowned overall winner and took home a prize of £1,000 in supplies.
Blackford Primary School in Carlisle, Ysgol Llanfarian in Ceredigion and St Elizabeth Catholic Primary School in Tower Hamlets each won a £500 prize. Jubilee Primary School in Hackney was named as the overall winner and received the top prize worth £1,000.
