Advice for people who are homeless

The census counts everyone in England and Wales, and it's critical that you take part. By filling in your form, you are helping your local authority better understand the needs of people in your area.

In Wales, you will have the option to complete the census in either English or Welsh. Please only fill in one form.

There are four options for taking part:

1. At a hostel or shelter where you regularly stay

If you regularly stay at a particular hostel or shelter, the manager there should be able to give you a resident pack. The manager of the shelter can request a paper form on your behalf.

2. At any hostel or participating shelter on census weekend

If you stay at or visit a hostel or participating night shelter or day centre between Saturday 20 March and Monday 22 March 2021, the manager should be able to give you a paper form. This has a code on it, so you can complete online if you prefer.

3. Staying overnight at someone's home on Census Day

If you were staying at someone's house on the night of Sunday 21 March 2021, the householder should include you there as a member of the household. They may ask you questions so that they can give answers about you on their household form.

You can answer separately from the people in this household if you prefer. The householder can request an individual access code or paper form for you when completing their online household form.

4. Calling the contact centre

Call the contact centre and choose option 4: "if you don’t live in a permanent location". When you get through to an adviser, tell them you are currently homeless.

Important information:

I need help to complete the form

If you have difficulty filling in the form, try to get a friend or family member to help you. A member of staff at a hostel or shelter may also be able to help you.
