Ethnic group, national identity, language and religion : Overview
On 29 November 2022, as part of our topic summaries releases for Census 2021, we published data about people’s ethnic group, national identity, language and religion in England and Wales.
This gave the latest information about:
- which ethnic groups people identified with
- the main language people use
- how well people, who do not have English as a main language, could speak English
- how people describe their national identity
- which religious groups people identified with
In this video we explain what the Census 2021 ethnic group, national identity, language and religion topic summary includes. We also highlight some of the most important and interesting data from it.
We created " Census maps (opens in a new tab) " on the ONS website. This interactive map allows you to see ethnic group, national identity, language and religion data in different local authority areas and neighbourhoods, as well as other Census 2021 data already released.
Test your knowledge of your local authority area in our interactive census quiz. You can play the census quiz (opens in a new tab) on the ONS website.
Census 2021 was the most inclusive census ever. People could identify as they wished, using online search options and paper write-ins. Now that the census ethnic group, national identity, language and religion topic summary release has been published, find out how we’re turning this data into meaningful statistics.
