Education

On 10 January 2023, as part of our topic summaries releases for Census 2021, we published data about education in England and Wales.

What's included in the Census 2021 results about education

The Census 2021 results about education included data about people who have obtained academic, vocational or professional qualifications, as well as the number of schoolchildren and full-time students.

This answered questions like:

  • how many people aged 16 years or older held higher education qualifications?
  • how many schoolchildren and full-time students were there in England and Wales in 2021?
  • which region was the most highly qualified in England and Wales?

You can find out more about the Census 2021 results about education in England and Wales (opens in a new tab)  on the Office for National Statistics (ONS) website.

Welsh education information

We provided information in the Welsh language for all Census 2021 topic summaries, and the Welsh Government released data specifically about Wales.

We created a downloadable PDF in Welsh of the topic summary bulletin for England and Wales about education. You can download this under the Main points heading in the education in England and Wales release (opens in a new tab)  on the ONS website.

The Welsh Government published Census 2021 topic summaries information that is specific to Wales. The release about education included data about the highest level of qualification held, schoolchildren, students and others in full-time education in Wales.

You can find out more about the topic summary information about education in Wales (opens in a new tab)  on the Welsh Government website.

Important information:

We created " Census maps (opens in a new tab) " on the ONS website. This interactive map allows you to compare education in different local authority areas and neighbourhoods, as well as other Census 2021 data already released.
