Local authorities

Thank you to our local authority partners.

We were delighted with the level of support we received from local authorities in the lead-up to and around Census Day and in the following quality assurance phase. We’d like to thank you for your contribution.

The first Census 2021 results have been published. They show information about the numbers of households and population of England and Wales, in total and at local authority level.

We plan to publish all other main Census 2021 data within two years of the census.

Census 2021 topic summaries

We published Census 2021 topic summaries from autumn 2022 to winter 2023.

The topics of the data we released included:

  • demography and migration
  • UK armed forces veterans
  • ethnic group, national identity, language, and religion
  • Welsh language
  • labour market and travel to work
  • housing
  • sexual orientation and gender identity
  • education
  • health, disability, and unpaid care

Working together to promote the Census 2021 results

As we did while the census was taking place, we want to work with local authorities to raise awareness of the Census 2021 results and help people to use them.

Materials and resources are available to help you understand and raise awareness of Census 2021 results. Please use them to promote the census results on social media, on your website and with local communities.

Downloadable resources
are available to support and promote the census results.

Quality assurance

The quality assurance of census estimates involves a wide range of checks. This ensured that the statistics are high quality and represent the whole population, not just those who completed the questionnaire.

The Code of Practice for Statistics (opens in a new tab)  allowed us to give local authorities an early look at provisional estimates for quality assurance purposes. This year, for the first time, we invited local authorities to take part.

The quality assurance exercise for local authorities took place in April 2022. Thank you to all those who took part.

You can read more detailed information on our approach to quality assuring the census estimates (opens in a new tab)  on the ONS website.

Staying connected

The Census 2021 team will carry on sending you regular updates, including details of relevant census releases, and we’d love to stay in touch. If you move on from your role, please ensure that someone takes over as census contact at your local authority.

If you have any queries, please email the Local Authority Partnership team (opens in a new tab) .
