Completing the census : What if I was away or abroad on Sunday 21 March 2021?
I was away from home
If you were away from home on Sunday 21 March 2021, you should fill in your household form as soon as you can after you get back.
I'm temporarily living or staying outside of the UK
If you were not in the UK on Sunday 21 March 2021 and will be away for less than 12 months, you should still be counted in the census.
You should be included on the form at your permanent or family address in the UK if you have one.
If there's someone staying or living at your UK address
If they're filling in the household form, they should include you on it.
If there's no one at your UK address
You should fill in the household form as soon as you get back.
If you don't currently have a UK address where you could stay, then you don't need to be included. A UK address could mean somewhere like a family or parental home, or an address that you own or rent.
I permanently live outside of the UK
If you're continuously living outside of the UK for any period of 12 months or more that includes Sunday 21 March 2021, you don't need to fill in a census form.
I'm staying in the UK for less than three months
If you usually live abroad but were in the UK on Sunday 21 March 2021 for a period of less than three months, you should be counted in the census as a visitor. The owner, accommodation manager or householder should answer some questions about you.
I'm staying in the UK for three months or more
You should be included as a resident on the form at your usual UK address for this period. The householder should include you on their form.
If you don't have a usual UK address for this period, you should be included on the form for the address where you were staying overnight on Sunday 21 March 2021.
