Census 2021 results - Why the numbers matter video transcript

Zach:

To encourage family and friends of children like us to take part in the Census 2021, a competition was created by the Office for National Statistics.

Astrid:

The Let’s Count! competition asked kids across England and Wales to create a project that could show how important census information is.

One year on, the Office for National Statistics is getting ready to release the first set of results.

Zach:

They’ve come back to my school to tell us how they’ve been getting on.

Grace: putting microphone on

Do you want me to pass it through to you?

Mabel: putting microphone on

Wait, no…(giggles).

Kate: putting microphone on

It goes there and then you speak into it.

Frankie: putting microphone on

Big bit on the inside.

Mrs Sharon James, Deputy Head Teacher:

We decided to use the census project as an opportunity in our maths curriculum so that we could show children that numbers in the real world really mattered.

Grace:

Our project was big but not as big as the census is.

Question card:

How did it feel to win the Let’s Count! competition?

Finley:

It was really, really exciting to hear.

We’re all very proud of ourselves.

Mabel:

It was amazing because we took part in it.

We helped the school win it and it was really cool.

Question card:

How do you think the census data will be used?

Mabel:

They need to work out how many shopping centres, how many hospitals, how many schools they need because otherwise then it’s not going to be enough.

Frankie:

If you don’t have enough homes then people is going to be living on the streets and you don’t want that.

Kate:

It’s for your education, your jobs, your food supply.

Film Director:

What percentage of households do you think took part in the census?

Was it a. 35%? b. 68%? or c. 97%?

Frankie:

I’m going to say 68. What do you think?

Finley:

Same. 68.

Kate:

I think it’s 90 something because like you should be doing it.

Mabel:

97.

Grace:

97.

Film Director:

Well done! That’s the correct answer.

Question card:

What do you think the Census 2021 population will be?

Frankie:

20 more million.

Finley:

I reckon it’ll be in the 80 million.

Mabel:

Not that much less, but less.

Grace:

I think less too.

Kate:

I’m going to say 50…

Zachary:

Around 57 million.

Kate:

I’m going to say 50 to 55 million.

Film Director:

Are you guys looking forward to the results of the census?

Kate:

Yeah, because I’m going to show Zach that I’m correct and he’s not.

Zachary:

I’ll show you I’m correct and you’re not.

Kate:

No!
